Backup Power and Generators

When the grid goes down, power keeps food cold, phones charged and medical devices running. Choose a quiet battery power station for indoor use, a fuel generator for big loads, or both.

What to look for

  1. Add up the watts you need. A fridge, lights and phones need far less than a whole home.
  2. Battery power stations are safe to run indoors. Fuel generators are never safe indoors or in a garage.
  3. Pair a power station with solar panels so you can recharge without fuel.
  4. Dual fuel generators run on gas or propane, and propane stores for years.
  5. Always have a battery powered carbon monoxide alarm if you own a generator.

Common questions

What size generator do I need for a power outage?

A fridge, lights, phones and a few small devices usually need about 2,000 to 4,000 watts of running power. Whole home backup with central air needs much more, often 10,000 watts or above.

Is a power station or a generator better?

Power stations are quiet, safe indoors and need no fuel, but hold limited energy. Generators run large loads for days on fuel but must stay outdoors. Many families own one of each.

Where is it safe to run a generator?

Only outdoors, far from windows, doors and vents. The CDC advises keeping generators at least 20 feet from your home. Never run one in a garage, even with the door open.
